A Toddler Autumn Capsule: Six Pieces, Twelve Outfits

September in Brooklyn is eighty degrees at pickup and sixty at drop off. By late October the mornings are colder still and the sun feels warm at noon. A toddler goes through both in one day, in one outfit, and refuses to carry anything. So an autumn capsule is a stack of thin layers that go on and come off in the stroller, not a heavy coat and a pile of tees. Six pieces, twelve outfits, one rule.

This is the autumn version of our toddler summer capsule. Same logic, warmer pieces. It's built for a two to four year old, sizes 2Y to 4Y, which on a European tag is 92 to 104 centimeters.

The six pieces

A plain long sleeve tee. White, cream or grey. This is the base under everything and the whole outfit on a warm afternoon. Cotton, a neckline that goes over a head without tears. Ours run $24 to $35 on the toddler shelf.

A print sweatshirt. The piece the child picks. A koala, a raccoon, leaves. It reads as an outfit on its own over the plain tee and a soft bottom, and it's the layer that comes off first when the classroom is overheated. In toddler sizes ours run $29 to $51, on long sleeves and sweatshirts.

A cardigan that opens at the front. The autumn piece that summer didn't need. It goes on in the stroller without pulling anything over a head, it comes off in a warm car in three seconds, and over a dress it turns a summer piece into an October one. Cotton or a cotton knit, not a chunky wool, so it fits under the jacket. In toddler sizes, $29 to $65 on the cardigan shelf.

Soft pants. Elastic waist, no hardware, corduroy or cotton twill or a jogger. This is the piece that makes the other five work, because a plain grey or sand bottom takes any print above it. For a child in toilet learning, the elastic waist isn't a preference, it's the thing that decides whether the day goes well. In toddler sizes, $29 to $35 on pants and leggings.

One dress with the leggings that go under it, or one printed bottom. The dress and its leggings count as one piece here, because in autumn they're never worn apart. A flannel or fleece dress worn over the long sleeve tee with leggings under it is a full autumn outfit, and it's the outfit that gets the photo. For a child who won't wear a dress, a printed pant or a skirt leggings does the same job. In toddler sizes dresses run $34 to $48, on the dress shelf.

One jacket. A bomber, a quilted jacket or a short coat, sized with room for the sweatshirt under it. This is the only piece in the six where sizing needs thought, and it has its own page: should you size up a kids coat for autumn. $40 to $120 on coats and jackets, toddler sizes included.

The leggings earn their place twice over: under the dress in October, under corduroy pants on the coldest mornings, on their own in September. One pair, plain, $29.

How six turns into twelve

Plain tee and soft pants. The default. Sixty degrees and rising.

Print sweatshirt over the tee, soft pants. The everyday outfit from October on.

Cardigan over the tee, soft pants. For the child who won't wear a sweatshirt today.

Dress alone. The warm afternoon in September.

Dress over the long sleeve tee. The first cold morning.

Dress, tee, leggings. Late October, and the outfit that goes to grandmother's.

Dress with the cardigan on top. The birthday party.

Print sweatshirt, leggings. Tumbling class, or a day at home.

Tee, cardigan, jacket, soft pants. The cold drop off, with the cardigan coming off in the classroom and the jacket staying on the hook.

Sweatshirt under the jacket, pants. The playground in November.

Tee and pants with the jacket over it and nothing in between. The warm morning that turns cold, and the jacket is the only layer that has to come.

Cardigan over the sweatshirt, soft pants. The coldest morning before the jacket comes out.

And whatever is clean. Every real capsule ends there twice a week, and a good capsule makes that combination fine anyway.

The rule that keeps it at six

Every new piece has to go with at least three things already in the drawer. A sweatshirt that only works with one specific pant isn't a seventh piece, it's a sixth problem. Grey, sand, cream, navy and one print colour keep everything above the line. The same test runs on the site: each product page carries a Pairs well with block, and the items in it are matched by size, brand and colour, not picked at random.

Sizes and the autumn growth

Two years on a European tag is 86 to 92 centimeters, three years is 92 to 98, four is 98 to 104. Toddlers grow in bursts, and autumn is a long season. Tops and dresses can be bought in the size the child is now, with the usual rule that a child between two sizes or at the top of one takes the larger: a tee that's an inch short in March still works with a cardigan over it. Pants are the piece to watch, because a pant that's too short in November is done. If the child is near the top of a size in September, buy the pants one size up and turn the cuff. Every listing here shows the size exactly as printed on the tag, and the centimeter system is explained on what size is 110 in kids clothes.

Washing six pieces every second night

A capsule this small gets washed constantly, so the fabric has to take it. Most of what's on our toddler shelf is cotton, and the care block on each listing says machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, tumble dry low. Cotton with elastane in it, the leggings and joggers, says no tumble dryer and reshape while damp, because heat kills the stretch. Wool knits say hand wash and lay flat. Read the block before you buy, because a cardigan that needs hand washing is not a capsule piece for a toddler.

Everything above sits together on the autumn layers shelf and the toddler shelf. What the daycare cubby needs out of these six is on the daycare and school clothes checklist. Most pieces are here in one or two sizes and we rarely restock, so the size selector shows what's on the shelf in Brooklyn today.
